Bridges of History Between Samogitia and France

On 14 May, Žemaičių muziejus „Alka“ welcomed distinguished guests from France: Anthony Poullain, Head of the French-Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce, members of the Lithuanian branch of “Le Souvenir Français”, and Dominique Juillet, representative of the de Choiseul-Gouffier family, which owned Platelių Manor until 1940.

During their visit to Samogitia, the delegation travelled to Plateliai to honour the graves of the former manor owners and visited the site of the former manor estate. Returning to Telšiai, the guests explored the museum’s Historical Exhibition, where special attention was devoted to artefacts connected with Plateliai Manor and the temporary exhibition From the Archive of Plateliai Manor.

The visitors showed particular interest in the 19th-century correspondence and diaries of the de Choiseul-Gouffier family, as well as the virtual photo exhibition presenting the history of the manor and its owners. The delegation highly appreciated the museum’s efforts in preserving and presenting heritage related to France and expressed willingness to contribute to future research initiatives.

During the meeting, discussions were held regarding possibilities for cooperation in translating historical manuscripts from French into Lithuanian and searching French archives for valuable iconographic material related to the history of Plateliai Manor.

The visit concluded with a symbolic group photograph beside the portrait of Sofia Tyzenhauz de Choiseul-Gouffier.

The temporary exhibition was prepared by collection curator Regina Bartkienė, who also accompanied the guests throughout the visit.
